Poultry Dressing (Gluten-Free) ©

Updated: Dec 24, 2024

There’s nothing quite like the aroma of my mother’s turkey dressing wafting through the house to signal the start of the holidays. This cherished family recipe combines the sweet tartness of apples, the savory richness of sausage, and the comforting flavors of celery, garlic, and classic poultry seasoning. Tossed with perfectly toasted bread cubes, this dressing captures the essence of the season in every bite. Whether you choose to stuff it in the turkey or bake it to golden perfection in the oven, this dish is sure to bring warmth and joy to your table, just as it has to ours for generations.

SERVINGS: 8

PREP TIME: 30 Minutes

COOK TIME: 30 MIN

TOTAL TIME: 1 hour

INGREDIENTS

Prepare Bread Cubes

  • Preheat oven to 325°F

  • Use a prepared loaf of bread and cube ((use Inspiration Baking Homemade White Bread for best results).

  • Spread bread cubes on a large baking sheet

  • Sprinkle poultry seasoning and garlic salt over the cubes

  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the cubes are dry and crisp, turning them halfway through with a spatula

  • Let cool completely before using. (optional: leave out overnight)

Ingredients for dressing

  • 2 Cups of prepared bread cubes

  • 1 Tablespoon of oil

  • 1/2 Pound seasoned sausage

  • 1/2 Cup chopped onions

  • 2 Celery stalks, diced

  • 1/2 Tart apple, finely chopped

  • 1 Teaspoon Poultry seasoning

  • 1/2 Teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 to 1 Cup Chicken broth

  • 1 Whole egg, whipped

DIRECTIONS
  • In a skillet over medium heat, add oil and cook the sausage until done. Drain the grease.

  • Remove the skillet from the stove and add onions, celery, apple, poultry seasoning, and salt. Stir to combine.

  • Once the skillet is cool, fold in the bread cubes and mix gently.

  • Add the whipped egg and stir again.

  • Slowly add the chicken broth while stirring, adding just enough to moisten the bread cubes without making them soggy.

To Bake the dressing

  • Preheat oven to 325°F

  • Transfer the mixture to a baking pan and cover with aluminum foil.

  • Bake in the oven alongside the poultry for 30 minutes if space allows. Alternatively, bake it after the poultry is removed from the oven, keeping it covered until ready to serve.

To Use as Poultry Stuffing

  • Spoon the dressing into the poultry cavity, packing it loosely to allow for even cooking.

  • Secure the opening with kitchen string or a cavity clamp.

  • Once the poultry is fully cooked, remove the stuffing and transfer it to a serving dish.

  • Cover with a lid or aluminum foil to keep warm until ready to serve.

NOTES:
  • Store any leftovers in the refrigerator covered for several days.

  • I like my dressing covered with gravy.

  • If you don't have time to make bread, there are now prepared dressing cubes in the store.

  • You can also cook it on the stove top.
